Question

Describe how the change of state from a liquid to gas takes place?

Open in App
Solution

The quantity of heat energy required to change unit mass of a liquid into vapour at atmospheric pressure and at its boiling point without any change in temperature is known as latent heat of vapourisation.

Step 2 : Explanation: 1.The boiling of a liquid takes place at a fixed temperature. 2.When a liquid is heated, the heat energy makes its particles move even faster.
3.At boiling point the particles of a liquid possess sufficient energy to overcome the force of attraction holding
them together and separate the particles to form a gas. 5. At the boiling point, the liquid starts boiling but its temperature does not change although it is still being heated.
6.This heat energy which is used to bring about a change from liquid state to gaseous state is known as latent heat of vapourisation

Step 3: Example: When water is heated to a temperature of 100°C, it boils rapidly to form steam and so the boiling point of water is 100°C.
