Question

Describe how the gravitational force between two objects depends on the distance between them.

Solution

The gravitational force F between two bodies of masses M and m kept at a distance d from each other is :
F equals fraction numerator G M m over denominator d squared end fraction t h e space f o r c e space b e t w e e n space 2 space b o d i e s space i s space i n v e r s e l y space p r o p o r t i o n a l space t o n t h e space s q a r e space o f space t h e space d i s tan c e space b e t w e e n space t h e m. t h a t space i s comma F alpha 1 over d squared

Since gravitational force is inversely proportionalto the square of the separation distance between the two interacting objects, more separation distance will result in weaker gravitational forces. Therefore , if we double the distance between two bodies, the gravitational force becomes one-fourth and if we halve the distance between two bodies, then the gravitational force becomes four times.
