Question

Describe how the two figures below are alike and how they are different. Which box has larger lateral surface areas?

Open in App
Solution

Surface area: Surface area is the amount of space covering the outside of a three-dimensional shape.

As from figure it is clear that

Diameter of cylinder =7cm

Radius of cylinder (r)=72cm

Height of cylinder (h)=7cm Also,

Dimension of cube is of =7cm

i.e Both figures have the same heights.

Firstly Lateral surface area of cube =4×(side)2=4×7×7=196sqcm

Also lateral surface area of cylinder =2πrh=2×227×72×7=154sqcm
As we can see CSA of Cylinder is 154cm2 and Lateral surface area of the Cube is 196cm2

Hence, a cube has a larger surface area.
