Question

Describe how water reacts with Carbon dioxide state experimental conditions and write the balanced chemical equation.

Solution

  • When carbon dioxide reacts with water Carbonic acid is formed. from which hydrogen ion dissociates increasing the acidity of the system.
  • Hence in addition to any greenhouse effect, carbon dioxide emission to the atmosphere can increase the acidity of the atmosphere and precipitation.
  • When carbon dioxide reacts with water a weak acid is formed.
  • As carbon dioxide is present in the air is blown into the flask containing an indicator sensitive to small changes in the PH.
  • There are consequent colour changes observed.
  • The chemical reaction between water and carbon dioxide is :
  • CO2(g)carbondioxide+H2O(l)waterH2CO3(aq)carbonicacid
