Question

Describe in brief the function of ribs and diaphragm in breathing

Open in App
Solution

Dear student,

Breathing is the process of taking air into and expelling it from the lungs. One breath means one inhalation plus one exhalation. The ribs are present in the chest cavity surrounding the lungs and diaphragm is a muscular sheet which sits at the base of the chest and separates the abdomen from the chest. The ribs protect the lungs and expand as we inhale to increase the space for the lungs.
During inhalation, ribs move outwards and upwards whereas the diaphragm moves downwards to increase the surface for lungs to take up more air. During exhalation, ribs move inwards and downwards whereas the diaphragm moves upwards, back to its position.
