Solution

Thomson Atomic model (Plum pudding model):

  1. Given by J.J. Thomson.
  2. Postulates:
  1. An atom is like a sphere of positive charge in which electrons are embedded like the dry fruits are embedded in a plum pudding or seeds are embedded in a watermelon.
  2. The positive and negative charges are equal in number and thus, an atom is electrically neutral in nature.

3. Drawbacks or Limitations:

  1. It didn’t explain how the positive and negative charges are held in the atom.
  2. It does not explain the stability of the atom.
  3. It didn’t explain Rutherford’s scattering experiment.
