Description of menstrual cycle
∙ When a girl attains puberty, her menstrual cycle begins.
∙ At this age, the ovaries release sex hormones into the bloodstream, causing the maturation of eggs in the ovaries.
∙ Once in every 28 to 30 days, one mature egg or ovum is delivered by one of the ovaries.
∙ The uterus prepares itself for the fertilised egg prior to ovulation.
∙ The inner lining of the uterus thickens and softens, revealing a dense network of blood vessels to supply nutrients to the developing embryo (if the egg gets fertilised).
∙ If the egg is not fertilised, the inner lining of the uterus is not necessary, and hence it breaks down and leaks from the vagina in the form of vaginal bleeding called menstruation.
Duration of menstrual cycle
∙ Menstruation occurs once in about 28 to 30 days and it usually lasts for 3 to 5 days.
