Telomeres:

  1. A region of repetitive DNA sequence at the end of a chromosome is the telomere.
  2. Telomeres protect the ends of chromosomes from getting tangled.
  3. Every time a cell divides, the telomeres become slightly shorter.
  4. Telomere function gets lost after approximately fifty divisions.
  5. They are maintained by the enzyme telomerase.
