Solution:
  • Art and architecture evolved to a new height under the Chola patronage. They followed the Dravidian style of architecture with multi-storeyed pyramid-like towers called vimana with lofty gopurams.
  • The interior is composed of mandapas which are the pillared assembly halls. The garbha griha or the sanctum holds the main deity.
  • One example of this architecture is the Bruhadeshwar temple located in Tanjore. It was built by the great Chola king Rajaraja I.
  • It is also known as the Big Temple and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. There are beautiful Chola fresco paintings on the inner wall of the temple.
  • The most unique feature of the temple is that it has a tall gopuram and a smaller vimana. It is one of the finest examples of Dravidian temple architecture.
