Solution
Chawls of Bombay:-
Chawls were largely inhhabited by
migrant workers working in the textile factories of Bombay.
Chawls were constructed in the
'native areas' of the city of Bombay.
Chawls were multi storeyed
structures.
They were owned by largely private
landlords like bankers, merchants and building contractors looking to earn
quick money by exploiting migrant workers.
Each chawl was divided into smaller
one-room tenements which had no private toilets.
