• Chawls were largely inhhabited by migrant workers working in the textile factories of Bombay.
• Chawls were constructed in the 'native areas' of the city of Bombay.
• Chawls were multi storeyed structures.
• They were owned by largely private landlords like bankers, merchants and building contractors looking to earn quick money by exploiting migrant workers.
• Each chawl was divided into smaller one-room tenements which had no private toilets.
