Question

Describe the estimation of nitrogen by Dumas method.

Open in App
Solution

Dumas Method:- When nitrogen organic compound is heated with excess copper oxide in an atmosphere CO2, free nitrogen is obtained in addition to CO2 and water. Chemical reactions are:

C+2CuOCO2+2Cu
2H+CuOH2O+Cu

Nitrogen + CuON2+Oxidesofnitrogen
Oxidesofnitrogen+CuN2+CuO

The mixture of gases is collected over KOH solution that absorbs CO2

Percentage of Nitrogen:

22,400cm3 of Nitrogen= 28g [at STP]
V2cm3 of Nitrogen= 28V222400

Amount of nitrogen in "m" g of compound
=28V222400m
% of Nitrogen=28×VN2×10022400×m
