Question

Describe the events in the process of photosynthesis and give the chemical equation.

Solution

Photosynthesis :

  1. It is a process by which phototrophs convert light energy into chemical energy, which is later used to fuel cellular activities. The chemical energy is stored in the form of sugars, which are created from water and carbon dioxide.
  2. There are three sets of events that take place during photosynthesis. Following are the events that take place in the process of photosynthesis:
  3. Absorption of light energy in the form of sunlight by chlorophyll is the first event that takes place.
  4. The second event that takes place during the process of photosynthesis is the conversion of light energy into chemical energy where the splitting of water molecules takes place. The water molecule is split into hydrogen and oxygen.
  5. The third and last event in the process of photosynthesis is the reduction of carbon dioxide into carbohydrates.
  6. The carbon dioxide is taken from the atmosphere by the stomata and releasing of oxygen is considered to be the removal of waste products.
  7. Stomata play an important role during the process of photosynthesis. The exchanging of gases takes place with the help of stomata.
  8. Following is the chemical equation for the process of photosynthesis:
  9. 6CO2 + 6H2O → C6H12O6 + 6O2

Where CO2 is carbon dioxide, H2O is water, C6H12O6 is glucose, O2 is oxygen, along with the above mentioned, light energy in the form of sunlight is also required
