France was declared a constitutional monarchy on September 3, 1791. Preceding this, the French Revolution had started on June 29, 1789 with the Tennis Court Oath, when the Third Estate had declared itself the National Assembly. Over the next two years, the Assembly formulated a constitution which issued the Declaration of the Rights of Man. Under the constitution, the feudal system in France was abolished. The autocratic monarchy was also abolished and replaced with a constitutional monarchy.
