Agenda 21 is a voluntary action plan of the United Nations on sustainable development. It is meant to guide the course of sustainable development in the 21st century. The plan is divided into four categories.
1. Social and Economic Dimensions: These objectives are devoted towards combating poverty, changing consumption patterns, promoting health, achieving a more sustainable population, and sustainable settlement in decision making.
2. Conservation and management of resources: These objectives are devoted towards combating air pollution, preventing deforestation, protecting fragile environments, conservation of biological diversity .
3. Strengthening the role of major groups like children, youth and women.
4. Means of implementation including science and technology.
