Describe the function of oesophagus.

Oesophagus:

  1. It is a tube-like structure connecting the mouth and the stomach. It is around 30 cm in length.
  2. It has powerful muscles which gently push the food and fluids (bolus) down to the stomach.
  3. This rhythmic movement is called peristalsis.
  4. No digestion takes place in oesophagus.
