Solution

  • The heart is a mesodermally derived organ situated in the thoracic cavity between the two lungs, slightly tilted to the left.
  • It has the size of a clenched fist.

FUNCTIONS OF THE HEART:-
  • First, it receives deoxygenated blood carrying metabolic waste products from the body and pumps it to the lungs for oxygenation.
  • To pump oxygenated blood to the other body parts.
  • To maintain blood pressure.
  • To pump hormones and nutrients to different parts of the body.

The heart functions in the following ways:-
  • The right auricle receives deoxygenated blood with carbon dioxide(CO2) from all parts of the body.
  • The collected blood is then transported to the lungs for purification.
  • In the lungs, the exchange of gases takes place and oxygenated blood is sent back to the left auricle which pumps it to the left ventricle.
  • The left ventricle pumps off the purified blood to all parts of the body through arteries.
