The
organ responsible for the production of an ovum in primate females. In humans a
set of two ovaries is present and they are both functional. They are mainly
involved in gamete formation and hormone secretion. Normally, ovaries produce
one ovum per month or per menstrual cycle. They are involved in the secretion
of estrogen, testosterone, inhibin, and progesterone. These hormones
are responsible for secondary sexual characteristics in females and for the maturation
and maintenance of the female reproductive organs.
