During partition silk
industry faced setback due to weavers moving to Pakistan.
After independence, industry again flourished during five year planning era.
For planned
economic development central government adopted many policies to improve the
industry.
Central Silk Board
came into existence. A weaving training institute was established to provide
training to the weavers to improve designs, looms, tools etc.
Two dye-houses
were started during the same year.
At present there are 1.25 lakh handlooms and
3,800 powerlooms and about 300 silk textile mills in India.
At present, India occupies second position after China in silk production.
