Describe the growth of silk industry after independence.

  • During partition silk industry faced setback due to weavers moving to Pakistan.
  • After independence, industry again flourished during five year planning era.
  • For planned economic development central government adopted many policies to improve the industry.
  • Central Silk Board came into existence. A weaving training institute was established to provide training to the weavers to improve designs, looms, tools etc.
  • Two dye-houses were started during the same year.
  • At present there are 1.25 lakh handlooms and 3,800 powerlooms and about 300 silk textile mills in India.
  • At present, India occupies second position after China in silk production.
