Drinking water can be contaminated in many ways. Main contaminants include:

• Pesticides, sewage, nutrients, synthetic organics and acids. Chemicals like lead, petro chemicals, chlorinated solvents, etc., also contribute to water pollution.
  
• Bacterial infections: Typhoid, cholera, paratyphoid fever, bacillary dysentery, etc.
  
• Viral infections: Jaundice, polio myelitis.
  
• Protozoal infections: Amoebic dysentery.
