Solution:
The life of workers in 19th century England was adversely impacted by the abundant supply of labour in the market. Cities were flooded with people from the countryside seeking jobs. People with social connections were given jobs, while others waited several weeks to get a job. Seasonal demand for work in several industries resulted in prolonged unemployment, worsening the condition of workers.
Though there was an increase in wages in the early 19th century, it did not improve the living conditions of the workers. The real value of their earnings fell significantly due to a sharp increase in prices. The income of workers was also impacted by the period of employment which was highly inconsistent. In the 1830s, the percentage of unemployed people was anywhere between 35–75%.
People turned hostile towards technology due to the fear of unemployment. Women who earned their livelihood through hand-spinning started to attack the Spinning Jenny.
Post the 1840s, the situation of workers became slightly better as construction activities intensified and the transport industry began generating more employment.
