Open in App
Solution

Instructions:
  • Explain the location and climate of the Amazon basin.
  • Explain the natural vegetation and wildlife of the Amazon basin.
Solution:
Location:
  • The Amazon basin is situated in tropical and equatorial regions.
  • Many important rivers flow through the Amazon forest. The most remarkable is the Amazon river which nurtures the entire Amazon rainforest.
  • Amazon River makes its way from the Andes to the Atlantic ocean through the Amazon forest. In the course, various tributaries meet the Amazon river and these together drain into the Amazon river basin.
  • The Amazon river basin is the largest river basin in the world. The river basin drains portions of Brazil, parts of Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Columbia and a small part of Venezuela.
Climate:
  • The Amazon Basin stretches directly on the equator and is characterized by a hot and wet climate.
  • Rains almost every day.
  • The day temperatures are high with very high humidity.
  • At night the temperature goes down, but the humidity remains high.
Natural vegetation and wildlife:
  • The Amazon forest happens to be one of the largest forests in the world with the richest variety of plants and animals.
  • Flora includes bromeliad, Brazil nuts, and orchids to name a few. As it rains heavily in this region, thick forests grow. The dense roof created by leaves and branches does not allow sunlight to reach the ground. Therefore, the ground remains dark and damp. Only shade-tolerant vegetation can grow here.
  • Birds such as toucans, hummingbirds, and birds of paradise are found here. Animals like monkeys, sloths, and ant-eating tapirs are found here. Various species of reptiles, fishes, and insects also thrive in these jungles. Reptiles: Crocodiles, snakes, pythons, anacondas, and boa constrictors. Fishes: Flesh-eating Piranha fish is also found in the river
