Solution: Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act is considered as a watershed moment in Government’s effort to improve the condition of the farmers.
  • MNREGA was launched in 2006 as a security measure that aims to guarantee the 'right to work’.
  • The Act gives legal guarantee of wage employment to the adult members of rural households.
  • It prescribes that a rural household can demand at least one hundred days of employment in one year.
  • The work allotted shall be provided within 5 km jurisdiction from the village. Hence, the workers do not have to travel to far off cities in search of work.
