Solution

Mechanism of fertilization in plants:

  1. The fusion of male and female gamete to form a zygote is called fertilization.
  2. As a result of pollination, pollen grains are deposited on the stigma of the carpel, and it grows into a pollen tube.
  3. The Pollen tube pierces the stigma and grows through style.
  4. It enters the ovary and then ovisac through an opening called the micropyle.
  5. Pollen tube contains two male gametes. It releases the two male gametes into the embryo sac.
  6. One of the male gametes fuses with the egg to form a zygote.
  7. The fusion of the male gamete with the egg to form a zygote is called syngamy.
  8. The other male gamete fuses with two polar nuclei to form endosperm.
  9. This fusion of one male gamete with two polar nuclei is called triple fusion.
  10. In the ovary, two types of fusion take place, syngamy, and triple fusion. These two processes together lead to double fertilization.
