Question

Describe the mechanism of southwest monsoons.

Open in App
Solution

Instruction: Explain the southwest monsoons.

Solution:
  • The advancing monsoon or south-west monsoon blows in summer.
  • During summer a low-pressure zone develops over the Indian landmass and a high pressure develops in the Indian Ocean.
  • As a result of this pressure difference, moisture-laden monsoon winds blow from the Indian Ocean to the Indian subcontinent.
  • As the winds blow from the south-west direction, they are known as southwest monsoon winds.
  • South-west monsoon winds bring most of the rainfall in India.
