Question

Describe the method in steps to find the density of a pebble.

Solution

Density:

  1. Density is the measurement of how tightly a material is packed together.
  2. It is defined as the mass per unit volume.
  3. Densityρ=massmvolumeV

Density of pebble:

  1. To find the density of a pebble first we should have to find out the mass and volume of the pebble.
  2. Mass of the pebble can be determined by using spring balance, electronic weighing machine.
  3. Volume of the pebble can be determined by using displacement method.
  4. First put water in measuring cylinder and note the volume of water.
  5. Next, put the pebble in it. Again note the water level.
  6. As the volume of water displaced is equal to the volume of the dropped pebble, the difference between the two water levels will be the volume of the pebble
  7. Now we have both mass and volume of the pebble, hence we can find the density of pebble using Densityρ=massmvolumeV
