  • In order to separate two immiscible liquids, a separating funnel is used.
  • Since kerosene oil and water are two immiscible liquids. The mixture can be separated using a separating funnel.
  • Separation of kerosene oil and water:
  • The process of separating a mixture of kerosene oil and water is as follows -
  1. Fill a separating funnel halfway with water and kerosene and close the tap. In an iron stand, the separating funnel is clamped in a vertical position.
  2. The separating funnel is filled with the immiscible liquid-liquid mixture (kerosene oil and water). Allow the mixture to sit for at least half an hour.
  3. The mixture's immiscible components are split into two different layers. The lowest layer is made up of thicker, denser liquid water.
  4. The upper layer is made up of kerosene, which is a lighter and less thick liquid. A conical flask is put beneath the separating funnel's nozzle.
  5. The tap is gradually opened, allowing the heavier liquid to drip into the flask one drop at a time.
  6. The tap is turned off when the denser liquid (water) has been drained.
  7. The tap is closed once the denser liquid (water) has been drained. Under the nozzle of the separating funnel, another conical flask is put.
  8. The lighter liquid is drained by opening the tap (kerosene oil).
