Question

Describe the molecular model for a liquid. How does it explain that a liquid has no definite shape, but has a definite volume?

Open in App
Solution

Molecular model for liquid:

• In liquids, the molecules are loosely packed and the intermolecular force of attraction is less. So, the molecules can move over one another, within the boundary of the liquid. Thus a liquid has a definite volume, but no definite shape.
• Due to comparatively more intermolecular distance than solids, they are more compressible and have low density.
• Molecules of liquid move in a random manner within the boundary of the liquid.
