Describe the poisonous nature of carbon monoxide

Open in App
Solution

Carbonmonoxide(CO):

  • Carbonmonoxide(CO) is highly poisonous gas.
  • If a sample of air containing 0.5% carbon monoxide by volume is inhaled, we may die.
  • This is because the molecules of carbon monoxide combines with the haemoglobin present in the blood cells and form a stable compound called carboxyl-hemoglobin.
  • This does not allow to absorb Oxygen(O2).
  • Thus depriving our body cells of Oxygen(O2).
  • This causes obstruction in respiration and causes death.
