Solution

Preparation of KMnO4 Potassium permangante is prepared by the fusion of MnO2 with an alkali metal hydroxide and an oxidising agent like KNO3. It forms dark green, K2MnO4 which disproportionates in a neutral or acidic solution to give permanganate.
(i) 2MnO2+4KOH+O2KNO3−−−2K2MnO4+2H2O
(ii) 3MnO24+4H+2MnO4+MnO2+2H2Oor3K2MnO4+2H2SO42KMnO4Potassiumpermanganate+2K2SO4+MnO2+2H2O

Reactions of KMnO4 in acidic medium
MnO4+8H++5eMn2++4H2O(i)
(i) Iron (II) ions Ferrous is oxidised to ferric.
[Fe2+Fe3++e]×5(ii)
Add both Eq. (i) and (ii) x 5 and cancelout the spectator ions and molecules
5Fe2++MnO4+8H+Mn2++4H2O+5Fe3+

(ii) SO2 : It is oxidised to SO24 by acidified KMnO4
SO2+2H2OSO24+4H++2e(iii)
Add both Eq. (i)x2 and (iii)x5 and cancelout the spectator ions and molecules
5SO2+2MnO4+2H2O2Mn2++4H++5SO24

(iii). Oxalic acid
C2O242CO2+2e(iv)
Add both Eq. (i)x2 and (iv)x5 and cancelout the spectator ions and molecules
5C2O24+2MnO4+16H+2Mn2++8H2O+10CO2
