Cellular respiration uses oxygen to break down food to release energy. It occurs in body cells. The sugar molecules in food are oxidised to form carbon dioxide and water and energy is released. This oxidation reaction is as follows:

C6H12O6 + 6O2 → 6CO2 + 6H2O + Energy
