First woolen textile industry was established in the year 1876
in Kanpur in the state of Uttar Pradesh.
It was established here first because Kanpur was the principal
depot for British Indian army.
This mill was followed by establishment of another mill in
Dhariwal of Punjab in 1881.
Subsequently, new mills were started in Mumbai and Bangalore in
1882 and 1886 respectively.
The industry could not make progress till the end of Second
World War.
After independence this industry made a rapid progress
especially during planning era. At present there are more than 600 woolen
mills, 1100 hosiery units and 150 spinning units which produces both fabrics
and yarn.
