Describe the progress of woolen textile industry after independence.

  • First woolen textile industry was established in the year 1876 in Kanpur in the state of Uttar Pradesh.
  • It was established here first because Kanpur was the principal depot for British Indian army.
  • This mill was followed by establishment of another mill in Dhariwal of Punjab in 1881.
  • Subsequently, new mills were started in Mumbai and Bangalore in 1882 and 1886 respectively.
  • The industry could not make progress till the end of Second World War.
  • After independence this industry made a rapid progress especially during planning era. At present there are more than 600 woolen mills, 1100 hosiery units and 150 spinning units which produces both fabrics and yarn.
