Describe the responsibilities of a Patwari.

Patwari is a land record officer of a village. He performs a number of important functions for the smooth functioning of the village. His main functions are

1. Assessing the crop grown during harvest

2. Maintaining a register called Khasra in which he notes the harvest of all three seasons: rabi, kharif and zaid

3. Maintaining the Record of Rights of the land so that the current owner and inheritor of every land is known

4. Collecting the land revenue and informing the government about the harvested crops

5. Reporting to the government about all the serious calamities affecting the land or the crops or any disease among men and beasts

6. Being responsible for all the maps and equipment used in the area
