Solution

Philosophers played a vital role in spreading revolutionary ideas during the French Revolution. Voltaire, Rousseau, Montesquieu, John Locke were some prominent thinkers whose ideas created a feeling of nationalism and encouraged people to raise voice for justice. These thinkers exposed the inefficiency of the rule of monarch and instigate people to challenge his authority. The ideas of these philosophers directly attacked the privileges and feudal rights which were enjoyed by upper classes. The people became active and started to question the social inequalities and made a demand to set up a government responsive to the needs and interests of the people.

Some of the books written by French philosophers were:

1. The two treatises of the government written by John Locke.

2. The Social Contract by Rousseau

3. The Spirit of Laws by Montesquieu.
