Question

Describe the role of the following :

(i) SiO2 in the extraction of copper from copper matte.

(ii) NaCN in froth floatation process.

Open in App
Solution

(i) Function of silica is to remove FeS present in the matte as FeSiO3 slag.

2CuFeS2+O2ΔCu2S+2FeS+SO2

2FeS+3O22FeO+2SO2

FeO+SiO2(Flux)FeSiO3(Slag)

(ii) It acts as depressant to prevent one type of sulphide ore particles from forming froth. e.g., when NaCN is added to a mixture of ZnS and PbS, it prevents ZnS from forming froth by forming complex, Na2[Zn(CN)4]. Only PbS forms froth.

4NaCN+ZnSNa2[Zn(CN)4]+Na2S
