Role played by Graphite in the extraction of Aluminium:

  • Graphite in the extraction of Aluminium mainly is used as an electrode as it is a very good conductor of electricity and it has a very high melting point.
  • It prevents the liberation of Oxygen (O2) so that the Aluminium doesn’t get oxidized by oxygen.
  • Graphite acts as an anode during the process of electrolysis and its main role is to prevent the formation of O2 at an anode .
  • Al2O3 reduction is made easier by Graphite as anode.
