Most of the people during Shivaji Maharaja’s era were staying in the village.The villages were self-sufficient, and a barter system was prevalent in those villages. The standard of living can be described as follow:
  • Crops and food: The farmers grew the crops like jowar, bajra, wheat, rice, corn, and others. The daily meal of common people consisted of bhakari, onion, chutney, and gravy. Rich people’s meals consisted of rice, dal-varan, chapatis, vegetables, salads, and milk products.
  • Housing: Village houses were made up of mud and bricks while wadas with multiple storeys existed in cities.
  • Clothing: Men used to wear a dhoti, kurta, angarakha, and mundase. Women used to wear nine-yard sarees and blouses.
