Describe the structure of a neuron with the help of a neat diagram.

The structure of a neuron:

  1. Neuron is the basic functional and structural unit of nervous system.
  2. It is made up of two parts cyton and axon.
  3. Cyton contains all the cell organs of the cell. It has thin cytoplasmic extension called dendrites which receives message from organs.
  4. Cyton transmit impulses to the other neurons through the axon.
  5. The axon is the longest dendrites of a neuron which is more than one meter in length.
  6. The end of axon has small terminal branches that are connected to the muscle or any other neuron.
  7. There is a small gap between the neurons called synapse. Message are transmitted through chemicals in the synapse.
