Question

Describe the structure of DNA in detail.

Open in App
Solution

Deoxyribonucleic acid or DNA is a molecule that contains the instructions an organism needs to develop, live and reproduce.
These instructions are found inside every cell, and are passed down from parents to their children.

DNA is coiled tightly to form structures called chromosomes for it to be pacakged inside the nucleus of a cell. [1 mark]

DNA is made up of molecules called nucleotides. Each nucleotide contains a phosphate group, a sugar group and a nitrogenous base. [1 mark]

The four types of nitrogenous bases are adenine(A), thymine(T), guanine(G) and cytosine(C). The bases on one strand pair with the bases on another strand: adenine pairs with thymine, and guanine pairs with cytosine respectively. [1 mark]

Nucleotides are attached together to form two long strands that spiral to create a structure called a double helix. [1 mark]
