Describe the structure of sarcomere.

Open in App
Solution

  • Sarcomere are the basic unit of striated muscle tissue.
  • It forms the repeating unit between two Z lines.
  • Skeletal muscles is made up of tubular muscle cells.
  • Each muscle fibers contain numerous tubular myofibrils.
  • The myofibrils consists of repeating sections of sarcomeres which appear as alternating dark and light bands.
  • Sarcomeres are composed of long, fibrous proteins as filaments that slide past each other when a muscle contracts or relaxes.
  • Two of the important proteins are:-
1) Myosin forms the thick filament.
  • Myosin has a long fibrous tail and a globular head, which binds to actin.
  • Its head also binds to ATP, which is the source of energy for muscle movement.
2) Actin forms the thin filament.
  • These molecules are bound to the Z line that form the borders of the sarcomere.
