Aestivation:

  1. Aestivation is the method of arrangement of sepals or petals in a flower bud in relation to other members of the same coral.
  2. It is mainly divided into five types:-
    a) Valvate Aestivation
    b) Twisted Aestivation
    c) Imbricate Aestivation
    d) Vexillary Aestivation
    e) Quincuncial Aestivation

(A) Valvate estivation:

  1. When the margins of the petals are in contact with each other without overlapping, it is called valvate aestivation.
  2. For example, Calotropis.
  3. Anona demonstrates this type of aestivation.

(B) Twisted estivation:

  1. Contoured or twisted estivation occurs when the margin of one petal overlaps the margin of the next.
  2. This gives the corolla a folded appearance.
  3. Example - Hibiscus.
