Describe the various agents of pollination.

Open in App
Solution

Pollination:- Transfer of pollen grain from the anther of the stamen to the stigma of the pistil of the flower is called pollination.

There are three most common agents of pollination.

(a) Wind (b) Water (c) Insects

  1. Wind
  • Pollen grains are light in weight and can be easily taken away by the wind from one flower to another.
  • These plants produce enormous numbers of small pollen grains.

2. Water

  • The flower of the aquatic plant may release pollen grains from its anther in water and carried out to the stigma of the same species flower. Ex Hydrilla and Vallisnaria3.

3. Insects

  • The nectar-producing flowers are pollinated by insects.
  • These types of flowers are colored, and strong-smelling to attract insects.
  • When insects get nectar, the pollen stick to their body.
  • And when this insect visits another flower of the same species, some pollen gets transferred into the stigma of that flower.
  • Thus the second flower gets pollinated.
