Solution: Some of theeducational developments that took place in Tamil Nadu during the British rule are as follows:
  • Sir Thomas Munro, the Governor of Madras Presidency (1820-27) introduced Western education in Madras Presidency. The Munro Education Commission recommended the creation of Collectorate and Tahsildare schools in each district.
  • Wood’s Despatch of 1854 led to establishment of the Department of Public instruction in Madras Presidency.
  • Madras University was founded in 1857.
  • In 1882 the Local Boards Act was passed to open new schools and to get grants from the government.
  • Annamalai University was established at Chidambaram in 1929.
