Sir Thomas Munro, the Governor of Madras Presidency (1820-27) introduced Western education in Madras Presidency. The Munro Education Commission recommended the creation of Collectorate and Tahsildare schools in each district.
Wood’s Despatch of 1854 led to establishment of the Department of Public instruction in Madras Presidency.
Madras University was founded in 1857.
In 1882 the Local Boards Act was passed to open new schools and to get grants from the government.
Annamalai University was established at Chidambaram in 1929.
