Solution
Layers of soil:
Soil is formed by the weathering of rocks.
Soil contains minerals, water and humus, which are essential for the growth of plants.
Plants are the main source of food for most of the animals surviving on the Earth.
The uppermost layer of the Earth's crust is called the
topsoil
where life exists.
The
topsoil
is dark in colour and this layer contains humus which is very important for plant growth.
Just below the topsoil is a layer of light-coloured soil called subsoil.
The bottom layer is made up of solid rock called bedrock.
This layer is devoid of any organic matter.
In the soil, a variety of living organisms such as bacteria, fungi, worms and insects live.
