Describe the various steps involved in the separation of iodine, iron filings and salt from a mixture.
This method separates and retains each substance.
1. Filter the sand/solution mix.
2. Use a magnet to separate the iron (sand and iron are separated).
3. Mix carbon tetrachloride with the water and shake. (this removes the iodine to the carbon tetrachloride). Separate the water and carbon tetrachloride (they do not mix). The carbon tetrachloride will then vapourize away leaving iodine.
4. Boil the water through a condensing unit. The salt will stay at one end and water will be at the other.
