Question

Describe three factors which affect boiling point of a liquid.

Open in App
Solution

  • Boiling is the process in which a liquid changes to gas on heating or increasing temperature.
  • The temperature at which the liquid starts boiling at one atmospheric pressure is called its boiling point.
  • Different liquids have different boiling points.
  • The boiling point of water is 100°C.

Three factors that affect the boiling point of a liquid are:

Forces of attraction: Greater the forces of attraction greater will be the boiling point. Similarly, the lower the forces of attraction lower will be the boiling point.

Adding salts: Adding salts such as impurities increases the boiling point of the liquid. The amount of increase will depend on the type of salt being added to the liquid.

Pressure: If the external pressure is less than one atmosphere then the boiling point gets decreased. The boiling point of a liquid increase when the pressure is more than one atmosphere.
