Solution:
  • Population growth is the change in the number of inhabitants of a country or a territory during a specific period of time.
  • Factors affecting population growth:
    • Birth rate
    • Death rate
    • migration
  • Birth rate
The birth rate refers to the number of live births per 1000 persons in a year.
  • Death rate
The death rate refers to the number of deaths per 1000 persons in a year.
  • Migration
The movement of people across regions and territories. It impacts the population number and distribution of the population.
  • Internal migration
    • Within the country
    • No change in the country’s population
    • Population distribution varies
  • International migration
    • From one country to another
    • Changes the country’s population
    • Population distribution varies
  • There are two ways of expressing population change:
    • Absolute change
    • and Percentage change
  • Absolute change
The absolute increase is the magnitude of the increase in population for a defined period.
  • Population change (absolute numbers) = (population at later date) – (population at earlier date)
  • Population change in a place = (number of births + number of in-migrants) – (number of deaths + number of out-migrants).
  • Percentage change
The amount of increase for every 100 people in the base population is called a percentage change in population.
