An electroscope is a device that is used to test if an object is carrying a charge or not. (0.5 marks)
It consists of two gold leaves that are connected to a brass rod. The other end of the brass rod is connected to a metal disc as shown in the diagram. (0.5 marks)(1 mark for diagram)
When a charged object comes in the contact with the metal disk, the charges are transferred to the gold leaves through the metal disk and the brass rod. The gold leaves become charged and start repelling each other. (0.5 marks)
Whereas, if an uncharged body touches the metal disk of the electroscope then no charges are transferred. (0.5 marks)
Therefore, we can say that when we touch a body with the metal disk of the electroscope and gold leaves diverge then the body is charged and if gold leaves do not diverge then the body is uncharged. (1 mark)
