Meristematic tissue is the tissue type in plants that consists of actively dividing cells.
Characteristics include : 1. small, polygonal cells, thin cell walls, large nucleus with a dense cytoplasm.
Meristmatic tissues can be of 3 types and they are the following :
- Apical meristem:
Structure - they continuously divide
location - they are present at the tip of roots and shoots
function- it helps in the linear growth of the plant.
2. Lateral meristem:
structure - they divide continuously
location - they are present around the vascular bundle
function- they help in increasing the diameter of the plant.
3. Intercalary meristem:
structure - they divide continuously
location- they are present at the internodes of the twigs
function- they are responsible for the growth of nodes , internodes and leaves
