Determine if the following ratios form a proportion. Also write the middle terms and extreme terms where the ratios form a proportion.
(i) 25 cm:1 m and Rs. 40:Rs. 160
(ii) 39 litres : 65 litres and 6 bottles :10 bottles
(iii) 2 kg:80 kg and 25 g:625 g
(iv) 200 mL:2.5 L and Rs. 4:Rs. 50
(i) 25 cm:1 m and Rs. 40:Rs 160 or, 25 cm:100 cm and Rs. 40:Rs. 160
25 cm100 cm=25÷25100÷25=14
Rs. 40Rs. 160=40÷40160÷40=14
so, both ratios are equal. hence they are in proportion.
Middle terms =1 m and Rs. 40
Extremes terms =25 cm and Rs. 160
(ii) 39 litres :65 litres and 6 bottles :10 bottles
39~litres65~litres=39÷1365÷13=35
3~bottles10~bottles=3÷210÷2=35
so, both ratios are equal. hence they are in proportion.
Middle terms =65 litres and 6 bottles
Extremes terms =39 litres and 10 bottles
(iii) 200 mL:2.5 L and Rs. 4:Rs. 50 or, 200 mL:2500 mL and Rs. 4:Rs. 50
200 ml2500 ml=200÷1002500÷100=225
Rs. 4Rs. 50=4÷250÷2=225
so, both ratios are equal. hence they are in proportion.
Middle terms =2.5 L and Rs. 4
Extremes terms =200 mL and Rs. 50
(iv) 2 kg:80 kg and 25 g:625 g or, 2 kg:80 kg and 25 g:625 g
2 kg80 kg=2÷280÷2=140
25 g625 g=25÷25625÷25=125
So, in this case the ratios are not equal.Hence, they are not in proportion.
