The correct option is C 60 square units

This composite figure is a little different.

There are two ways to look at it.
  1. As addition to various simple figures
  2. As subtraction of various simple figures
The second approach is short and simple.
We can break this figure into a large rectangle out of which a L - shaped figure has been removed.



Area of rectangle = length × breadth

Area of the large rectangle =9×8

=72 square units

Area of L - shaped figure = Area of three squares

We can see that the L - shaped figure is made up of three small squares of side length 2 units as depicted in below figure,


Area of one square = side × side

=2×2=4 square units

Area of three squares =3×4=12 square units

Area of composite figure = Area of rectangle Area of L - shaped figure

=7212=60 square units

Therefore, (c) is the correct option
